Welcome to Crystal Point Diamond Mines, one of the largest quartz deposits ever found on the East coast. Located just outside of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, this fee-dig mine has been visited by people from all over the world. The mine is usually open to collectors from May through October. Rockhound clubs and other groups as well as children are accommodated. The quartz crystal points, resembling diamonds, are very plentiful and easy to dig.  Most of your time is spent deciding which ones to keep.  If you don't like to dig, there are plenty around to sift out of the dirt or just pick up.

We've added a self explanatory pictorial of a recent field trip

Typical multi-crystal point plate

The crystal points on the left are on a solid plate that was dug out in one piece.  This one is about 9 inches (23cm) long. It has been cleaned thoroughly.  It represents the type of crystals most commonly found.  Smaller fist sized clusters are also easy to get.

While rare, it is possible to find hematite (red) coated crystal points like the sample to the right.  It also is about 9 inches (23cm) wide.

Another sample, this time with a ruler alongside to show the size. Once again the crystals are very clear near the tip on most, with some having a milky base.

This shot of freshly dug material shows the wet mud still covering the crystals. This cluster is only 4 inches (10cm) across. Loose points an inch or two long are laying all over, waiting to be picked up.

The quartz deposit in located in a dike (straight into the ground) that is very long and deep. From time to time it is opened up with heavy equipment, making it easier to uncover fresh cavities full of crystals.
